‘ Victoria, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain‘ and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith, Sovereign of the Most Distin-‘ guished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, to all to whom these‘ presents shall come Greeting. Whereas by the Statutes of Our said Order,‘ the power is vested in Us, of altering or abrogating the same, or of adding‘ thereto, and explaining any particular therein, which alterations are to be taken‘ as part and parcel of such Statutes. And whereas by the Xth Statute, it is‘ amongst other things declared, that the Chancellor of Our said Order, for the‘ time being, shall be nominated a Knight Commander, and shall rank as the‘ Senior Knight Commander thereof. And whereas it is doubtful how far,‘ under such Statute aforesaid, the Chancellor of the Order, for the time being,‘ could lawfully hold his Office with a higher rank in the Order than that of‘ Knight Commander, Now it is Our Royal will and pleasure, that the following‘ Article and Explanations are, and shall be deemed to be part and parcel of the‘ Statutes to be perpetually observed within Our said Order: ‘ That the Chan-‘ cellor, for the time being, shall be eligible to hold, in conjunction with his‘ Office, such other dignity or rank in the Order, as We, Our heirs and suc-‘ cessors may be pleased to confer upon him.’
