HERALDS AND PURSUIVANTS.

By the Royal Warrant of the 5th of February 1783, it is declared, that theOrder “shall have a Chancellor, Registrar, Secretary, Genealogist, Usher,King of Arms, Heralds, Pursuivants, and such other Officers as might fromtime to time be appointed;” 1 and by the Table of Fees, “ Our two Heralds”are entitled to UlO each, and “ Our four Pursuivants” to £5 each, from eachKnight Companion, 2 whence it may be inferred that the Heralds and Pur-suivants of Ireland form part of the Order, and that they have attended all In-stallations.

The two Heralds of Ireland are called “Dublin” and “Cork;” and one ofthe four Pursuivants is named “ Athlone,” but the three others do not bear anyparticular designation.

ESQUIRES.

Though the Order of the Garter was made the model of that of SaintPatrick, it was thought proper to adopt one part of the constitution of theBath, by allowing each Knight Companion to appoint three Esquires to attendhim at his Installation.

“ It is ordained,” by the sixteenth Article, that “ every Knight, as soon ashe shall be summoned to his Stallation, shall appoint three sober, discreet, andsufficient Esquires of the Body, who shall be Gentlemen of Blood, and withoutreproach; and as touching the declaration of Gentlemen of Blood, it is declared,that they shall be descended of three descents of Noblesse; that is to say, ofName and of Arms, both by the fathers side and of the mother’s side, a cer-tificate of which, signed by Our Principal King at Arms within Our saidRealm, shall be delivered by each Knight fourteen days before his Stallation,
