First and Principal Knight Grand Cross; and the next day Her Majesty waspleased to constitute him, Acting Great Master of the Order. His RoyalHighness was Invested with the Ensigns of a Civil Knight Grand Cross, onthe 21st of February following; and his Installation was Dispensed with bythe usual Instrument on the same day.

On the 29th of January 1838, Lieutenant-General Sir John Colborne, aKnight Commander (since created Lord Seaton), was promoted to be a KnightGrand Cross, and he was Invested in Canada, on the 22nd of October 1839, byMajor-General Sir James Macdonell, the second in command of the Troopsand a Knight Commander, thus presenting the anomaly of a Member of aninferior Class of the Order, Investing a Knight with the Grand Cross. Onthe 15th of February 1838, the same Dignity was conferred upon the’ KnightCommander, Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Bradford, a Knight Grand Crossof the Order of the Guelphs; and on the 16th of that month, upon the KnightCommander, Major-General Sir Henry Worsley, of the East India Company’sArmy. Sir Thomas Bradford was Invested, and his Installation Dispensedwith, on the 21st of March 1838; and Sir Henry Worsley’s Investiture wasDispensed with, on account of his infirmities, by a Royal Warrant dated onthe 6th of April 1839. On the 20th of April 1838, Lieutenant-General SirFrederick Philipse Robinson, a Knight Commander, was nominated a KnightGrand Cross.

At Her Majesty’s Coronation, ten Knights Grand Cross were appointed bythe following Ordinances:

“ Whitehall, 19th July 1838. Forasmuch as the Sovereigns of this Realmhave been wont, on their Coronation, to confer the Insignia of the Order ofthe Bath upon divers of their subjects, the Queen has been graciously pleased,upon the occasion of Her Majesty’s Coronation, to declare and appoint, asHer Majesty doth hereby declare and appoint, that Admiral Sir William SidneySmith, K.C.B., Lieutenant-General Sir John Lambert, K.C.B., Lieutenant-General the Honourable Sir William O’Callaghan, K.C.B., Archibald Earlof Gosford, Lord George William Russell, 4 Her Majesty’s Envoy Extraordinary

4 Lord George William Russell, who is a Colonel in the Army, was previously a Companion ofthe Order; and he is the only instance of any Companion having been made a Knight Grand Crossvvithout being first a Knight Commander. His Lordship was, however, appointed a Civil KnightGrand Cross, in reward not of Military, hut of Diplomatic services.
