“ 28th June 1726.
“ My Lord,
“ It is a great uneasiness to me, to give your Lordship the trouble, even of another Letter, abouta trifle. I only fear that in a few days I may go out of town, and so miss of the honour of seeing you.If your Lordship wants more satisfaction in the matter between us, I am ready to give what is fullysufficient, or else to quit all my pretensions. The executors of the Dukes of Kingston and St. Albanshave immediately, upon sight of my Warrant, delivered up what I claim under it. Nor did I ever hearof any objection, unless this, that the Sovereign sometimes has given some of them to others, where hehad not first given them to the Chancellor. This may be true; but then, is certainly an argument forthe Chancellor’s right, when the Sovereign has by an express Warrant given them to him. I would notspeak one word about it, did I not think it my duty, as I am ordered and empowered to do it, agree-ably to an express rule of the Order of the Garter for the restitution of what the Crown gives; and tothe King’s Warrant to me for that purpose. I entreat your Lordship to pardon me, if I seem imperti-nent. I shall take your answer for a favor, whatever it be, and assure you that I am, with greatrespect,

“ I had the honour of a Letter from your Lordship, at the end of last July, in which you wereso good as to promise to see me the week after. But. as your greater affairs have kept you more inthe country than you then expected, and prevented your kind design, I hope you will not think merude in letting your Lordship know, that I shall be very well satisfied with the account your Lord-ship has received of the value of the things in question, and with what you shall think fit to do,agreeably to that account. I am truly, my Lord,

Appendix, p. v.—In the notice of the Liber Niger it is said, that that MS. has disappeared sinceits publication by Anstis in 1724. But this is not the fact, Dr. Aldrich’s compilation being now in thecustody of the Registrar of the Order.
