ORDER OF THE GARTER.

Iv*

P. 132. Hall’s account of the Grand Feast in 1519, ought to have followed the other contemporarydescription of it, in pp. 124—129.

P. 135. Statutes of the Order. —The variations pointed out in the Notes, between the copy ofthe Statutes in the text, and those issued to the Knights, refer to the official copies printed in 1834;but in the revised, and most carefully edited, official copy printed in 1840 (4to. pp. 106), many of thosevariations do not occur.

P. 169. William Lord Parr. —It is said, on the authority of the Register (Anstis II. 426), thatWilliam Lord Parr, being about to join the army against the Scots, was hastily Installed on the27th of April 1543, instead of having waited until the Annual Feast in May; but his Stall Plate statesthat he was Installed on the 18th of May, 36 Hen. VIII. [1544]. Vide p. xiv. antea.

P. 191. Anno 1564.—“ By the Accord made on the 30th November 1564, between the Queen’sMajestie and the Regent of the Low Countries, for free intercourse, it was agreed, that for the adjust-ment of all existing difficulties between the Countries there should be held in Flanders a Colloquium,to consist respectively of a Knight of the Garter, and a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, one of the Privy Council of either Sovereign, and a Civilian. These individuals were to meet inBruges; and it appears from a Memorial of the matters to be treated of, dated 11th March 1564-5,that the Viscount Montague [who was a Knight of the Garter], Mr. Doctor Wotton, one of HerMajestie’s Privy Council, and Mr. Haddow of Requests, were the Commissioners named by theQueen.”—Burgon’s Life of Gresham, vol. II. pp. 60, 66.

P. 239. On the 6th November 1632, Gustavus Adolphus King of Sweden, who was Elected aKnight of the Garter in 1627, was slain at the battle of Lutzen ; and in 1635 the Ensigns were returnedto the Sovereign by the Swedish Ambassador. An account of the ceremony was printed at Stockholmin 1639; and a translation of it will be found in the Lansdowne MS. 881 et seq.

P. 260. Ashmole. —To the notice of Ashmole it may be added, that he endeavoured to establishthe office of “ Historiographer and Remembrancer of the Order of the Garter,” and that his appointmentto it, though determined upon, but was prevented by the representation of the Chancellor of the Orderin a Chapter held at Whitehall, on the 20th February 1662. In December following, he addressedsome arguments to the Earl of Clarendon, Lord Chancellor, (who seems to have approved of the design),in answer to the objections, that the duties of the existing officers rendered such an appointment unne-cessary, and that he was already well provided for.—The original MS. is now in the Harleian MS. 6272.

P. 270. A minute account of the ceremony of returning the Ensigns of Charles the Eleventh Kingof Sweden is in the Lansdowne MS. 881, f. 125 et seq.

P. 278. Sir Robert Walpole. —The Election of Sir Robert Walpole, was commemorated byYoung, in a short Poem, entitled, “ The Instalment, mdccxxvi,” and inscribed to that Minister.Apostrophizing the deceased Knights, especially Lord Burleigh and the Earl of Godolphin, as

“ Ye mighty Dead ! ye Garter’d Sons of Praise !

Our morning-stars ! our boast in former days !”
