INTRODUCTION.

the insignia of the Order, 3 the fact may be added, that soonafter her accession she commanded the Chancellor to summona select number of Knights for the purpose of obtaining theiropinion as to the manner in which she should wear the Ensignsas Sovereign. The Companions to whom the consideration ofthe point was committed, were the Dukes of Somerset andDevonshire, the Marquess of Normanby, and the Earls ofRochester, Feversham, Portland, and Pembroke, who expressedtheir opinion that the Queen might wear the George pendantto a ribband from her neck, the Garter on her left arm, and theStar upon her breast. 4

In the account of the Chancellor of the Order, 5 reasons aregiven for discrediting the usual statement that the Office wasalways filled by the Bishop of Salisbury, from the time when itwas granted by King Edward the Fourth, in 1475, to BishopBeauchamp, and his successors in that See, until it was conferredupon Sir William Cecil by King Edward the Sixth. It hassince been discovered that, in 1491, Doctor John Morgan, Deanof Windsor, was Chancellor of the Order, and that he receivedRobes of the Livery of the Fraternity in that year. 6

No other changes than deaths and appointments have takenplace in any of the Orders since the following account of them
