Slaves' Prison.

In addition to the slaves who composed thecrew of the galleys, and who were included in thearticle of the said galleys, there were a consider-able number in the city, shut up in a place calledthe Slaves’ Prison, part of whom were employedin manufacturing linen cloth and cotton, for sailsfor the galleys and men-of-war, whilst the restworked at the docks, fortifications, &c. &c. Themaintenance and clothing of these slaves amount-ed to .. 29,428 li 14 .

The expence of the newly-baptised slaves, whowere kept separate from the others. . . . 8,834 6 18 .

Article LI.

Purchase of Slaves.

A great quantity of slaves being necessary forthe land and sea service of the order, the treasurywas under the necessity of purchasing some everyyear from private individuals, to keep up the usualnumber. ........ 4,488 6 0 .
