Reign, no Anniverfary of St. George was kept at Windfor'iby a Gt4«(i F ejiival.

This is fuppofed to be owing to the common Calamityof that Age, wherein moft Ceremonies, lolemn or iplen-did, efpecially fuch as related to Divine Services, cameunder the denomination of being either Superftitious orIdolatrous. Infomuch, that at a Chapter held at Green-wich, i Edw. VI. an Abolition being intended for fuchCeremonies as were not confonant to the King's Injun-ftionsj lately prefcribed, it was then decreed, that then,and for ever from thenceforth, at the Feaft of this moltNoble brder, no other Ceremonies Ihould be obfervedlhan fuch as were appointed by his Majeities Letter.

That no Procejfion fhould be made with going about theChurch, or Church-yard, but the Kjng’s Majefty s Procejfion,lately fet forth in Englifh to be ufed. His Majefty find otherKnights-Companions fitting in their Stalls, at the Entry,fuch Reverences to be made to the Kjng’s Majefty only as washeretofore. The Offering to be in the Box for the Poor, with-out any other Reverence, or kfjfng any Paten, or other thing ;hut only at the return, due Reverence to the KJng, as was itjedbefore. The Mafs of Requiem to be left undone, but yet,both on St, George’* Day, and for next Day, a Mafs to beSung with great Reverence ; in which, immediately after theWords of Confecration is faid, the Pricjl /hall fay the PaterNofter, and fo turn and Communicate to all, ot Jo many of theOrder, or other, after they have dont, as (hall be difpofed toreceive the Communion, according to the Order prefcribed byhis Majefiy’s Booh, of Communion, and without any otherRite or Ceremony after the faid Communion to be ufed ; ex-cept feme godly Pfalm or Hymn to be Sung in Englilh, andfo to end the faid Service. All Chapters, and other Ritesconcerning the Order, not being contrary to thefe, to remainus they have been ufed.

This Decree feemed to mean nothing lefs than a Prohi-bition to the holding the Grand Feaft at iVindfor, at leaftthe negledt of its Celebration there, whilft King Edw. VI,lived : And though toward the End of his Reign, fometare was taken for a Permillion to hold the faid Feaft,either on St. George’s Day, or fome other appointed byProrogation; yet it was without any regard to the anciencand ufual Place ; for when the Acft pslfed, commandingthe Days therein mentioned to be kept Holy, and no other,
