The Proctor’s Qualifications;

By the Statutes of the Order, the ProBor, whetherhe be nominated by his Principal, or by the Sovereign,mutt be Procurator fufficiens & tdoneas 5 that is, fuch aPerfon who hath always been accounted of unblameabieConverfation, not branded with any note of Infamy, butaltogether irreprovable. And tuch was Dominicus Fran-eifeus, Deputy to Charles, Duke of Ferrara, who in theBlach-Bcok. of the Order is characterized to be a Knight ofincorrupt Fame; nor are we to doubt but that otherProBors to Strangers were fuch, though the Teftimonialspf their Virtues do not appear in the Annals of theOrder.
Secondly, The ProBor ought to be a Perfoft corrcf-pondent to the State and Dignity of the Stranger that isinverted, which may fufficiently appear by leveral In-ftances; the Emperor Maximilian I. appointed for hisProxy, the Marquifs of Brandenburph, Anno 6 Hen, VII.Francis 1 . King of France, Adrian de Fercelin, Lord ofProfs, Anno 19 Hen. VIII. and Henry IV. of France, Sieurdi Chaftes, Vice Admiral of France, Anno 42 Elis'.
Thirdly, It is provided that he be a Knight, and with*out any manner of Repfoach ; and if it lo happen thathe have not receiv’d the degree of Knighthood, the So-vereign is to beftow that Honour before he be allow’d totake upon him the Execution of his deputative Power 5for none but Knights are capable of this Honour > or per-mitted to bear the Enfigns of fo great cm Order.
