Though this fourth Point is not inferted into KingAwry ViH’s Statures, yet the Subftance thereof leems tobe approved of before ; for we find among fome Orders,prepared by the Marquifs of Exeter, and other Knights-Companions, at a Chapter at l-Vindfor, the twenty fifthand twenty fixtb Days of May, Anno 8 Henry VIII. oneof them was fomething to this Purpofe.

Amongft the Number of thefe Candidates, theSovereign is chiefly to regard thofe who have moft Voices,or whom he conceives moft requifite to contribute to theHonour of the Garter, and moft Beneficial co himfelf, andof moft Advantage to his Crown and Kingdom. Wefind the Law hath not always referved the greateft Num-ber of Voices, as .will appear from the Annals ; yet it hasfometimes confirmed the Election, as in the Cafe of theDuke of Queenberry An- 5 Henry VI. where, after a due andfufficient Examination taken of the Scrutiny, the Duke, bytheconfent of moft Voices, was Eledted into the Stall ofThomas Duke of Exeter ; and fo was the Election of SirNicholas Car etc, the twenty fourth of April, in the 28Henry VIII.
It is remarkable in a Angular Inftance, that when twoKnights had on either Side equal Voices ; which was theCafe of Sir John Faftolf, and Sir John [{addiff ; the firftbeing eftgemed more Worthy, by the Sovereign’s Lieu-tenant, obtained 'he Election.
The fecond Inducement relates to fuch as, in all Ap-pearance, may bring m )ft Renown to the Order, and ad-vance it to a higher pitch of Greatnefs; and thefe have ina great Meafure been effedled, by enrolling ForeignPrinces into this Muflrious Society, whofe Valour andgreat Merit have proclaimed them delerving both ofNomination and E'eclion.
