The firft payment was agreed to be pay’d down, andfo to remain in force annually with requeft to the ab-sent Knights, that for the Honour of the Order, andcaufes in the Inftrument exprefs’d, they would approveof their Ordinance which paffed under the Seal of theOrder, Dated at Windfor, 1422. Afterwards King Hen.VI. in confederation of his Services to his Father andhimfelfj with confent of his Council, granted to thefnid Brugges, by Letters Patent, a Penfion of 20 1 . perAnnum , out of the Fee Farm of the City of Wtnchefier(luring his pleafure, which Penfion upon the furrenderof his Patent he granted anew to him and Agnes hisWife, for their Lives and the longer liver of them 5and when this Office upon Sir William Brugges death,was devolved on John Smart, Guyenne herald (3 April 28Hen. VI.) he had the yearly Sum of 20 /. granted himtherewith for Life out of the Exchequer : But his Suc-ceflbr John Wrythe, Norroy, obtained an increafe of Penfion1040 1 . per Annum, made payable out of thefmallCu-floms of the City of London 3 this annual Sum wasafterwards confirmed to Garter by the Conflitution ofhis Office, and an Augmentation from the then Knights-Companions additional to the Penfions granted by theirPredecefiors, upon the Death of King Hen. V.

In fucceeding times the Sovereign thought fit to aug-ment this Penfion to 50 1 . per Annum, (now payable outof the Revenue fettled upon the Order,) and theKnights-Companions yet to enlarge their Sallery,which they did, (the Sovereign a denting) by the de-cree made in a Chapter held at Windfor 13, 14, and 15.Sept.
