Violate)-’ of that Order would anfwer this our contrary at theirPert!, Bated at Oxford, under the Signet of this our Order the1 2 th Day of Dec. in the I 9th Year of our Reign.

This Officer by the Conflitutions hath a Penfion of50 1 . per Annum , or proportionable in Fees, Offices, orother Emoluments.; and Ann. i.and 2 Ph. and Mar,the fame numerical Penfion was conferred on 0w»Oglethorf, Dean of Windfor , out of the Exchequer, un;til fome Ecclefiaftical Preferment of like value llaoulddevolve on him. The fame was confirmed to Df. Maxey ,by Decree in Chapter, 1 6 Jac. I. and afterwards to Dr.Beaumont, by Letters Patent, under the Great Seal ofEngland, 20 Jac. I. but there needed no Allotment ofLodgings at Windfor to this Officer, as there was to thereft, fince both the Canons and Dean were provided ofHoufes belonging to their Ecclefiaflical Dignities withinthe College, at the Erection of the Order.

(j 4. Tt\% fourth Offcer of the Order is Garter. He was ordain-ed by King Henry V. with the advice and confent of allthe Knights-Corhpantons, who for the Honour of theOrder, was pleaied be fltould be the principal Officerwithin the College of Arms, and chief of the Heralds.The Services enioyned him, relating to the Order,were in preceding Times, performed by the WindforHerald of Arrns, an Officer created with that Title by K.Edward III. mych about the time of his Erefting thisOrder, and an Annual Penfion of 20 Marks, payableout of the Exchequer, by Letters Patent for Life, whichwas confirmed by King R. II.

Sir William Rruggcs was the Perfon firlf created Gar-ter, and called in the Inflitution of his Office, JartitrRoy d'armys . des Anglois, but eliewhere ffiled WillielmutBrugges, alias Dtffus, Gamer Rex Armorum. This Sir Williambecame a great Benefaffor to St. George's Church atStamford, and in the Windows of the Chancel caufedto be Reprefented King Edward III. with his twentyfive Knights-Companions kneeling, Habited in theirMantles and Surcoats of Arms, but now much flut-tered and defaced ; 7 ohn Smert his Succeffor had thisOffice conferred on him by Letters Patents, under thisTitle Rex Armorum de Garteria , and John Wrythe was ffiled
