Sir Francis »lfo bequeath’d 200 !.per Annum to be fettled in Lands, by his Executors, forthe perpetual Maintenance of Five Alms-Knights, afterthe rate of 40 l. per Annum to every one of them 5 buthis Executor growing flack in the Performance, theWork being rather expos’d to Ruin, than forwarded byhim; upon Complaints made to the Sovereign andKnights-Companions in Chapter, Orders were iffu’dout to quicken him, and a peremptory Letter, datedMar. 7. xiJjg. to go on with the Work faithfully ; whichCommands he evading, and bad Times coming on,the Building was totally neglefled. Sir Rich ird Craneafterwards dying, by his Will, dated Sept. 20. i< 545 - heappointed that his Mar.nor of Carbrooke in Norfolk fhouldhand bound for ever for Payment of the faid 200 /. perAnnum ; whereupon, by Inquifition taken at JVindjor,Mar. 4. 1652. ( by Virtue of,a Commiffion upon theStatute Anno 43 Eliz. for charitable Ufes) the Mannorsof Woodrijing and JVesjield, &c. in Norfolk, were foundliable to fatisfie for building and finifhing the faid FiveHoufes, and payment of the 200 /. yearly ; and further,that the Arrears thereof, from Sir Francis Crane's Death,came at that time to 32,00 /. fome Conteft enfu’d inChancery ; neverthelefs the 200/. per Annum was, Ju'y19. decreed to be paid out of all the Lands

which were Sir Richard's, and the building of theHoufes out of his perfonal Eftate. At Two Years Ex-piration arofe that fair Pile of Building, between theChancellor’s and Garter’s Towers, againft the WeftWall, in the lower Ward of the Caftle, which was be-gun again and finifh’d the next Year; the Expencesamounting to 1700 l. But for a final End of this Suit,it was decreed, Jan. 27. id59. the Mannor of Carbrookefhould ftand charg’d' with 200 /. per Annum, payablehalf-yearly at Michaelmas and Lady-dav, or within Thir-ty Days after, for the Maintenance of Five Alms-Knights,together with 30 l. yearly for Repairs, payable slfothen ; which annual Sum of 230/. Anno 12 Ca \ II. ina Chapter held at Whitehall, Jan. 14. the King decreedthe Chancellor of the Order, for the Time being,fhould receive and difpofe thereof thus : 200 l. perAnnum among the Five new Alms-Knights quarterly, atH 4 the
