were rendred great Objefls of Charity 5 among whichNumber wii Sir Robert Cbamblayne , a valiant Knight,an Honour to our Nation, for his renowned and martialServices abroad. He was of King Henry Vi’s Party inthe Civil Wars againft King Edit. IV. Immediately afterwhofe coming to the Crown he left England, and travel-led into Hungary, (with an Equipage of Three Servantsand Four Horfes) where in the Aftiftance of Mat howCorvinius King of Hungary againft the Turks, he beha-jred himielf very gallantly ; but profperous Fortune notalways attending him with Succefs, he. receiv’d manyWounds $ and at length was taken Prifoner, loft all,and forced to pay 1 500 Ducats forhisRanfom ; for theAtteftation of which he had the Great Seals of the Kingof Hungary, the Archbifhop of Crete , Legate de Laterein Hungary, the Emperor of Germany, the King of Sicily,the Count Palatine of the Rhine, and the Duke of Bur-gundy j and laftly, a Declaration thereof under the PrivySeal of King Edvc. IV. And being reduced to fo low anEbb of Fortune, he was, thro’ Hen. VII’s Favour, ad-mitted an Alms-Knight.

But lome obtained Admittance, probably out of De-votion, rather than Poverty, as Thomas Hulme, Claren-ceux King of Arms, Temp. Edit. IV. Lodoiricl ( Carly, theKing’s Phyfician, and John Meivtes, Secretary of theFrench Tongue, both Temp. Hen. VIE and BartholomewWejlby made fecond Baron of the Exchequer , 1Hen. VIII.

It is evident King Hen. VIII. defigned a Re-efta-blilhment of half the ancient Number of Alms-Knights, viz. Thirteen 5 for which purpofe he appointedby his Will 600 l. per Annum, in Mannors, Lands, andSpiritual Promotions, fettled upon the Dean and Canons,and their Succeftors for ever, upon the Provifo’s thatthey Ihould find Two Priefts to fay Mafs at his Tomb,to commemorate yearly Four Obits for him, and atevery Obit diftribute ill. in Alms, likewife to payli d. a. Week to thofe Thirteen Alms-Knights, whowere to have once a Year a long Gown of White Cloth,and a Mantle of Red, befides Five Marks annually, tofuch one among them as Ihould be conftituted their Go-vernor, and fo much for a Sermon every Sunday through-
