And the Great Office of Matter hereof is in theKing of Spain, who hath the Revenue of ThirteenCommandaries belonging thereunto to the Value of2,3000 Ducats per annum.

31. Knights of Chrift in Portugal.

These fprang alfo from the Ruin of the KnightsTemplars, whofe confifcated Eftates King Denys, fir-named Penoca, delired of Pope John XXII- might notbe dilpofed out of his Kingdom, in regard of thegreat Evils the Neighbouring Moors in Algarves, did hisKingdom 3 and forafmuch as the Town of Cajiro Marinwas a Frontier, and commodious to refill the Enemy,he moved for Licence to inftitute an Order of Knightstherein, and offer’d his Holinefs the Rents andjurif-diffion thereof, which accordingly was granted by thePope, and dedicated it to the Honour of God, andthe Exaltation of the Catholick Faith, under the Titleof the Military Order of our Lord Jejus Chrift, as is altedgedfrom the miraculous Apparition of our Saviour cruci-fied, leen by the King when he went out to fight theMoors.

32. Knights of the Paffion of Jefus Chrift.

This Order was erected by Charles King of France,(tho’ it made no Progrefs) and our King Richard II. witha large Defign exceeding all other Religious Orders,except thofe of St. John of Jerusalem and Knights Tem-plars. They were to renew the Memory of our Sa -viour’s Paffion, to extirpate Pride, Covetoufnefs andLuxury, to make way for the Reconqueft of Jerufalemand Paleftine, and for the Subverfion and Confufion ofEnemies of the Faith. A MSS. in the Arunde’ian Libra-ry* reckons up Twenty Caufes for theNeceffity of itsinftitution, which are too long to be inferted 3 and"j-ho it was dedicated to our Saviour, yet the Blelled\ irgin was look’d upon as a principal Mediatrefs and
