GROOTE HOUT-POORT, HAARLEM.

BESIDES the interest which wc take in Haarlem from itseventful history, it claims additional notice from being thebirth-place of the reputed inventor of the art of printing.Laurence Roster is said to have made this discovery, aboutthe year 1440, by cutting the bark of beech trees into letters,whilst walking .in the wood of Haarlem. This wood is about amile distant from the city, and forms a delightful promenadefor the inhabitants. The approach to it is through the pic-turesque gateway represented in the annexed view, and whichhas, in consequence, obtained the name of the Great WoodGate.* The magnificent mansion of Mr. Hope, since occupiedby the Princess Dowager of Orange Nassau, stands at theentrance of the wood.

* Since this view was taken, the Groote Hout-Poort has been removed, and amore convenient entrance made, opening 1 besides a fine view to the wood.
