THE STADT-HAUS, LEYDEN.

THIS magnificent range of building occupies a considerableportion of the principal street of the city. It is of a singularmixed style of architecture, and, with its fantastic ornaments, forms altogether a remarkably handsome edifice. In theinterior are to be seen some curious paintings, old armour, etc.

Leyden is a large and beautiful city, containing about 50,000inhabitants. The extraordinary siege which it endured, in theyear 1573, was one of the most remarkable events in thegreat struggle against the Spaniards. As a reward for thebravery and devotion of its inhabitants, leave was granted toform a university within its walls, and the distinction towhich it has since risen, has drawn hither students fromevery part of Europe.
