UTRECHT.

UTRECHT, the Trajectum Ulpii of the Romans, is oneof the most ancient cities of the north of Europe. It standson the banks of the old Rhine, upon rather more elevatedground than the general level of the surrounding country,and its canals are, consequently, much below the level ofthe streets. This circumstance gives to Utrecht quite a'peculiar character, and adds greatly to its picturesque ap-pearance. The most prominent feature is the tower of thecathedral, of light gothic architecture. It is 464 feet high,and commands a prospect of wonderful extent. r Ihe environsof Utrecht are pleasantly laid out in gardens and walks, withnumerous villas scattered all over the country.
