THE annexed view of the Egg Market at Antwerp ispeculiarly characteristic of the general features of the styleof building in the Low-Countries. The ornamented gableends of the houses in front have a remarkably picturesqueeffect ; and, in this view, the magnificent tower of the Cathedralrising above the other buildings, contributes to form one ofthe best street scenes that can be met with. To view thisscene in perfection, the traveller should visit it early in themorning, when it is crowded with peasantry of the neigh-bouring country, bringing the various produce of their farmsto market.

Antwerp, as a commercial city, is, at present, but the shadowof its former greatness; we still, however, view in its finebroad streets, such costly public buildings and noble privatehouses, that we may form some conjecture of its splendor inthe days, when it could boast of being the first commercialcity of Europe.
