SAINT GUDULA, BRUSSELS.

THE collegiate church of Saint Gudula is the moststriking ecclesiastical edifice in the Belgian capital. Itstands upon an elevated site in the upper part of the city,and towers majestically over all the surrounding buildings.

This church was formerly named after St. Michael, towhom it was originally dedicated ; but, in the year 1047, theremains of Saint Gudula, who died in 715, having been removedfrom the church of St. Geri to St. Michael’s, from that timeit has borne her name. The noble towers at its west end, werebuilt in the early part of the 16 th . century. This churchcontains some interesting monuments; and the pulpit isa most elaborate and beautiful specimen of carving, in oak,by the celebrated Verbruggen.
