YPRES.

YPRES or Ipres is the third city in importance of the statesof Flanders. It is said to have been built by Baldwin, third Count of Flanders, on the site of a chateau which wasdestroyed by the Normans. The chief picturesque featureof this city is the splendid Town T Tall, which ranges alongthe greater part of one side of the large market place. Thefront, exhibited in the annexed view, forms one side of anextensive but irregular quadrangle, in which are large hallsfor the deposit of the woollen manufactures of the citizens. The handsome tower surmounting the centre of this frontcontains the archives. This sumptuous gothic edifice wascommenced in the year 1342. To the right of the Hallwe observe the tower and part of the Church of St. Martin, which was raised to the dignity of a Cathedral by Pope PaulIV in the year 1559.
