TOURNAY is said to have been founded six hundredyears before the Christian aera, and is reputed the mostancient city of Belgium. Within the walls of the modernDoornich may he traced the boundary of the Roman Tornacum,and the Arch over the Schelde, represented in the annexedview, connecting the walls of the ancient city, is attributedto Roman workmanship. Tornacum is supposed to havebeen the capital of the Nerviens, and to have been takenby Cæsar after his defeat of that nation in the great battlefought on the banks of the Sambre. In more modern timesTournay has undergone the various vicissitudes of fortune,which have alternately favoured and devastated the greaterpart of the cities of Belgium. Henry VIII, of England,took the city from the French in 1514, hut gave it up bytreaty in 1518. Three years after, Tournay was taken bythe Emperor Charles V, who gave it to his son Philip ofSpain. Of late years this city has lost much of its ancientpolitical and commercial importance.
