GREAT SQUARE AT TOURNAY.

FEW cities in Europe present more striking featuresthan those of Belgium. Almost every town has a largesquare or market-place, surrounded by buildings mostly ofpicturesque forms. Generally, in the neighbourhood of thesquare stands some splendid gothic church, besides the town-hall and other public edifices. The great square at Tournayexhibits one of these picturesque scenes ; the towers of thecathedral rising in grandeur above the other buildings. Onthe west side of the square is a Well, covered by an ornamentalbuilding resembling a temple.

The cathedral was founded by Chilperic I, King of France.Its interior is ornamented by a variety of scvdptures, and itformerly possessed many good paintings, but the greater partof these latter were removed during the revolution. Tournaypossesses some excellent manufactories, the chief of whichare those of carpets, usually called Brussells’ carpets, andwhich give employment to a great portion of the inhabitants.
