NAMUR.

NAMUR is a handsome and well built city, standing at theconfluence of the rivers Sambre and Meuse. It containsabout 16,000 inhabitants, and is a place of considerablecommercial activity, possessing several manufactories. Thesurrounding hilly country abounds in mineral productions,and furnishes ample materials for workmanship to the artisan.The view here given is taken from the rocky height uponwhich the citadel is constructed, and which is separated fromthe city by the Sambre running at its base. From thiscommanding point we enjoy a beautiful prospect of the wholecity, and of the valley of the Meuse, which is seen winding inthe distance. Namur was formerly fortified by Cohorn andVauban, but its works were destroyed by the Austrians -whenmasters of the country, to avoid the expense of repairs. Newdefences have, however, lately been constructed, and Namurwill again hold its place as one of the important barrierfortresses.
