SHOULD the intention of completing the splendid cathedralof Cologne be ever carried into effect, it will surpass, in rich-ness and elegance, any other gothic edifice in the world. Thetowers were to have been five hundred feet high, but the highesthas not yet been carried to half that elevation. It is, however,a wonderful mass of masonry, exquisitely beautiful in its pro-portions ; and its ornaments are remarkably light and elegant.The North tower has not yet been carried higher than twentyfeet. The stone of which it is built is of a beautiful colour,nearly resembling the Bath stone, and was brought from theDrachenfels, where there is an immense excavation still calledthe Dome quarry.
