THE city of Cologne is enclosed within a chain of eighty-three massive towers, placed at intervals along the walls. TheBayen tower is situated at the southernmost point, and connectsthe defences with the Rhine on that side. It is often, thougherroneously, styled the Roman tower, having been built at noearlier period than the close of the thirteenth century, at thetime of the wars between the citizens and their archbishops.The city is upwards of six thousand yards in circumference,and contains a population of about fifty thousand souls.
