COBLENCE.

THE city of Coblence is built in the angle formed by thejunction of the Moselle with the Rhine, and hence its Romanname “ Confluentia.” The finest view of it, and of the tworivers, is obtained from the rock of Ehrenbreitstein. The wholeextent of the city, the Rhine with its bridge of boats, and theMoselle with its handsome stone bridge, all lie at the foot ofthe spectator. The sturdy fortress of Ehrenbreitstein frownsin sullen grandeur over the placid scene below. Coblence wasformerly the residence of the Electors of Treves. It is a placeof tolerable commercial importance, a considerable traffic beingcarried on by boats on the Rhine and Moselle.
