THE bold, massy rock, on which the old fortress ofEhrenbreitstein was built, is one of the most strikingfeatures to be met with along the whole course of the Rhine.It rises in abrupt and rugged grandeur to the height ofabout six hundred feet from the margin of the river; anddirectly fronts the city of Coblence which stands in aplain on the left bank, in the angle formed by the junctionof the Moselle with the Rhine. The annexed view shewsthe appearance of the rock with the little town of ThaiEhrenbreitstein skirting the river at its foot, as seen fromthe Coblence side. The picturesque character of the sceneis heightened by the half castellated forms of the works whichcrown the summit of the rock. The old fortifications ofEhrenbreitstein were blown up in conformity with a stipulationin the treaty at the close of the revolutionary war; but thePrussians, who are now masters of this place, are fortifyingit in the strongest manner, and, when completed, it will beone of the most impregnable citadels in Europe.
