PERHAPS there is no place on the borders of the Rhinewhich exhibits so great a variety of pleasing scenery as Ober-wesel. The sublime, the picturesque, and the beautiful arehere admirably blended ; and the prospects, both of the townwith its old embattled wall and towers, and of the surroundingmountainous country, are interesting from whatever pointthey may be viewed. In the annexed plate the Rhine is seenhemmed in by lofty hills, which, apparently barring its fartherprogress, give it the character of a lake. Some of the ancienttowers are seen rising above the richly wooded ravine on theleft, and the old church, with its massy square tower, standson a commanding height in the foreground.
