OBERWESEL.

IN the annexed view of Oberwesel, which is taken from theleft bank of the Rhine, a little below the town, we have one ofthe most pleasing prospects of this uncommonly romanticplace. The ancient walls and towers, the churches, and aboveall, the steep rock of Schoenberg, crowned with its ancientcastle, are seen from thence to great advantage, rising behindthe broad and rapid stream. Like most of the castles border-ing the Rhine, that of Schoenberg has its fabulous history, andthe story of the seven beautiful Countesses, is yet a favorite talewith the inhabitants of Oberwesel. The celebrated MarshalSchomberg, w ho ended his career at the battle of the Boyne, was a descendant of the noble family which formerly possessedthis castle.
