THE little town of Bingen stands just above, and in theangle formed by the confluence of the Nuhe with the Rhine. It is undoubtedly of Roman origin ; and the ruins of the castleor Klopp, seen on the right in this view, stand upon the siteof a Roman castellum, attributed to Drusus. The bridge overthe Nalie is called the Drusus Brucke, and probably was builtupon Roman foundations. The situation of Bingen is one ofthe most charming on the borders of the Rhine. It marksthe confines of the delightful region of the Rhingau, the favoriteabode of Charlemagne. At this point also commences the ro-mantic and mountainous tract which extends to the Sieben-bergen near Bonn.
