THE CITADEL OF WURZBURG.

THE Citadel of Wurzburg crowns a steep eminence onthe left bank of the Maine, and commands the whole expanseof the city, which spreads over a small plain on the oppositeside of the river. When viewed from the right bank, itsappearance is grand and picturesque. As a military post,it is one of great strength, and seems intended, rather to keepthe neighbouring city in subjection, than to repel its enemies. The steep slopes of the hill, on which it stands, are coveredwith \ ines, famed for yielding the choicest quality of Wurzburgwine. Since the late general pacification of the continent, the Duchy of Wurzburg has belonged to the house of Bavaria.
