THERE are few rivers which, for their size, and within sosmall an extent, exhibit such pleasing and picturesque varietyof scenery as the Neckar. As we ascend its banks from Hei-delberg we meet with some new features at every turn. Alter-nately steep rocky hanks, rich hanging woods and beautifulgreen slopes embellish the borders of the winding stream. The village of Neckargemund stands delightfully at a bend onthe left hank. Higher up we come to the castles of Neckar-stcinach and the Schwalben-Nest, (Swallows-Nest), with thevillage of Ncckarstein. The view here given is taken from theheight above the village, so as to shew the three castles ofNeckarstein with the almost inaccessible castle of Schwalben-Nest overhanging the rocky precipice.
